As-machined (medium)surface finish refers to a machined surface with moderate refinement, offering a balance between surface quality and cost-efficiency. It is produced using standard machining operations such asCNC milling orturning , with optimized but not fine-tuned cutting parameters. The surface retains visible but smoother tool marks compared to a rough or basic finish. Surface roughness typically falls in the range of 3.2 to 6.3 µm Ra, depending on thematerial , tool condition, and machining speed. This finish is suitable for parts where some surface texture is acceptable but functional tolerances remain important. It ensures reliable geometric accuracy while reducing excessive post-processing. Minor burrs may still be present and can be removed with light deburring. The finish is commonly applied to structural or internal components where appearance is secondary. It strikes a compromise between machinability, dimensional control, and production cost.
All metals like (Aluminum ,stainless steel etc.), and someplastics.
Typically Ra 1.6μm / Ra 63μin with visible tool marks.
Noticeable tool marks, matte to semi-gloss finish.
Not cosmetic; no finishing or smoothing applied.
No change in material thickness; true to machined dimensions.
Slightly rough with visible machining patterns.

The roughness average typically falls around 2.4 μm (95 µin), offering a cleaner surface than standard (3.2 μm) but not as smooth as fine (1.6 μm).
It’s ideal for parts that need to look reasonably good, fit together well, and don’t require the highest cosmetic or functional surface smoothness.
Yes, it’s often used for functional and semi-aesthetic components where appearance is somewhat important but doesn’t justify the cost of fine machining or post-processing.
